HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

The Department of Industries and Commerce ha 3 received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, July 29 : —“ The mutton market is dull, notwithstanding reports of small shipment! from New Zealand, and the average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4£d per lb. The average price today for other North Island mutton is 3Jd per lb. The lamb market is weak in anticipation of heavy arrivals. A further drop in prices of lamb seems imminent. The average prioe to day for New Zealand lamb is: Canterbury brand 5Jd per lb. The average price to-day of New Zealand lambs, of brands other than Canterbury, is 5 I-8d per lb. There has been no alteration in the beef market sinoe last week. The weather lately has been unfavorable to the sale of beef, The butter market is strong and all stocks are advancing. Danish is selling at 119 s and Canadian at 107. The cheese market is firm and there is a good demand. The average price of finest New"ijZealand cheese to-day is 53s poi: cwt co'ored, aud 57s for white. The supply is practically exhausted. The demand for hemp is getting bettor, and the price of New Zoaiand hemp, good, fair Wellington grado on spot, to-day, per ton is £2B, August to September shipments ;€2B 10s. For ooeksfoot the market is quiet and there is little doing, but a good feeling prevails. The average price to day for bright, clean New Zealand aocksfoot seed, reaching 171bs per bushel, on Bpot, is 53s per cwt.
