BAY OF PLENTY RAIL -

WAY LEAGUE.

The 2nd annual meeting of tfao League was held at Opotiki on the 12th inst., Mr H. R. Hogg, President, being in the chair. Tho attendance of members was small, but those present evinced renewed interest in the objects of the League. I’rom the enthusiasm shown, it ia evident that though during the past year the ardor of members has somewhat cooled tho League intends to renew the agitation for . railway . communication with fresh vigor.- This quiokened interest ia doubtless largely due to the success of the Bast Coast Railway League in obtaining the construction of tho railway to Te Karaka, togothor with the sentiments given utterance to at the opening ceremony. U?he annual report and balance-sheet were read and adoptod. The following officers wore eleoted for. tho ensuing year : President, Dr Reid vice-presidents, Messrs H. R. Hogg and J. H. Reid ; committee, Messrs J. W. Gordon, J. Carroll, D. McDonald. J. C; Arthur, S. N. 'Westney, C. Mewsham, and Cooper. _ The report emphasised the desirability of co-operating with Poverty Bay to obtain tho extension of tho railway to tho Motu. , . Several speakers supported ..his view, urging that by uniting forces there waa every 3 hope of inducing the Government to extend the line to the Motu within a reasonable time, and that this extension was ontitlod to consideration from Parliament as a link in the general scheme of the East Coast railway, a work of colonial importance. It was resolved to circulate another petition to Parliament praying for the speedy construction of the railway as far as the Motu, and that the Government authorise and survey the whole line from Gisborne to Rotorua. It was decided to communicate with the Motu and Gisborne to secure co-operation, in order that united pressure might bo brought to bear upon the Government during the present session.
