POLICE COMMISSION.
(Per Press Association.J Timaru, last night! The Police Commission sat here this ! morning, and took the evidence of the sergeant, detective, and six constables, this being all offering. The detective and constables all said that the, system of control and supervision at Timaru was of the best, the oonstabjes never knowing when to expect a visit from tbs sergeant. A majority of the witnesses had been stationed in Christchnrob, and expressed the opinion that the control there, as at Timaru, ioft no room for improvement. They had heard the rumor of a theft there by Macdonald, but nothing more. Some witnesses j had been stationed at Oamaro. They said there was nothing in. Macdonald's suggestion that thieving hean going on there. All denied Macdonald’s suggestion ru thieving by the force at Timaru. Sergeant Warring said there had been only two burglaries at Timaru during the past four years. In both cases the offenders had i been convicted. At the conclusion oj the evidence, Commissioner Djooia made a statement refuting thp, suggestions made in several papers Shat the Commission was appointed because the Government wore not satisfied with his statement that the police had got to the bottom of tho Dunedin thefts. The statement only applied to Dunedin, and the Commission 'was appointed to inquire ipta Other matters besides the Dunedin thefts, and the Police Department had suffered a good deal from unjustifiable adverse comment.
