CHARGE AGAINBT DR. ORPEN. ■’(Per Pboss Association.^ Auckland, last night. At the Polioe Court Dr Arthur Herbert Orpen was charged with having unlawfully used an instrumentar other means to procure a miscarriage of Sarah Mason Linkhorn, and with having committed a similar offence upon Adela Katerns, The detectives made an elaborate display of surgical instruments. Sarah Linkborn, aged 21 years, deposed to visiting Orpon’s surgery in.her lunch hoar on Jane 21, when he performed an operation upon .her. She paid* him‘bne sovereign; . She subsequently beoarne very ill. Later. —In the first charge against Dr Orpen of -committing an illegal operation, accused on beiDg chargod said hehad nothing to say,'and reserved his defence, pleading not guilty. Ho was.qommitted to the .Supreme. Court for trial., Asecond charge against Dr Orpen of committing an illegal operation on April 4th was then proceeded Mr Mays fbr the prosecution called Adela Katterns, ‘a young married woman. Sbe said she 1 was married on March 5 last. She told the accused she-was in trouble, 'and wanted to know if'he could help her to get rid of it. - Dr Orpen asked her how much money she had, and- was told that she had £5. Dr-Orpen remarked “ That’s . very'iittle,” and- took 1 thß money. The withess'gave‘particulars of -what : followed. Accused' was committed -for ’trial, bail being allowed, 1 'hirhself 'in £SOO, and two sureties of £250 each in eaoh case.
