Close to tho railway station .‘at GreenLane, about one o’clock this morning, a firo broke out in an untonanted oightroomod house, ownod by Mr McCullagh. The house was totally destroyed. It wae insured in the South British for £350. Edmund Gordon Shioils, residing with, his wife at Mount Eden,committed suicide 1 this morning by shooting himself in his bedroom with a revolver while his wife wasaway getting tho breakfast. Shioils, who was an insurance munager in Viotoria three yoars ago, had been somewhat; demented of late owing to the fact that, since his arrival in New Zealand, 21 years “go, ho had been unablo to procure suitable work. Lately ho has boon working afc V a brewery and often complained that the ♦A work was too hard. On Monday night hetold his wife that ho'was not goiog to work ' “gain, saying that he would bo better dead, us he had nothing to look forward to but hard work.
