HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE.
MR PERCY DENTON’S CONCERT. Despite tbe boisterous state of the weather last evening, there was a large and; appreciative audience at His Majesty’s Theatre on the occasion of Mr Percy Denton’s concert, which was in every sense from, start to finish an unqualified success. The City Band played sbvoral selections outside prior to tho commencement of the concert, and also contributed tho galop “ P.ost Horn ” as an overture to the second part. The Band has evidently much improved since its visit to Auckland. Sevorai .musical people who were present at the recent coriteot commented highly on the vast improvement shown in last night’s performance. Much credit is tberofore due to tbo present assiduous bandmaster (Mr Don). The Club nrchostra maintained their excellent reputation l by playing several selections during the concert. Special mention should be made of tbe good work displayed ■in the “ Orchid V selection, which was a musical treat. Mr Percy Denton received an ovation, and was enthusiastically encored for his artistic rendering of Alletseh’s “ Song of Thanksgiving,” which proved an excellent ponqeyt song. As an encore, he sang in fine style “ There is a Land.” His second number, “ Dreams,” afforded much pleasure to his hearers, and in response to the repealed demands of the audience he sang a favorite number from the 'evergreen *• Rip Van Winkle.” This item gave Mr Denton full soope to display tbo excellent range of his fine tenor voice, His caricatures of the Right Hon. R. J. Seddob were exceedingly clever, and bis introduction of local bits fairly brought down tho house. Much;interest was rnanifaoted in the re, appearance of Mis 3 Madoiine Knight, the young, talented, and gifted Auckland, vocalist, who was received with great enthnsiasm. Since last visiting this town Miss Knight has undergone considerable mnsiea! training and ouhure in her art, end the result therefrom was apparent in her vocalisation throughout the various items. Her first number. Noel Johnson’s “Fare; well to .Bummer,” received o most artistic iuterpreiiqtiqo, the yr.psjisji's enunciation, prohunciay.cn’, and phrqsmg being absolutely fauhiess, and the whola effect produced an artistic triumph. In response to the imperative encore Miss Knight rendered very pathetically “ There’s Nobody Else,’-’ a dainty ballad. In the eccond port of the programme Mies Knight Bang “ Angus Macdonald,” and os au oncore, Tosti's G°od.'byo.” which item was unanimously voted tbe gs.m of evening. Hor beautiful and pathetic rondei’; ing thereof ; scored for bor an undeniable double encore, rand in response thereto “Love tbe Pedlar ” was onjoyanly and intelligently heard. Mr, A. F. Kennedy, who is always a favorite in opoia, concert, or as an eloeutionis'j,, gave an excellent reading of tho ‘sketch 1 ‘ How Rtisy and I Fo 1 Out,” which piece received a'clover inteppreta; tion. As an encoto Mr Kennedy favored the audience with o-popular item entitled “ Woman’s Loyr,” which was given with excelieht eifec'. . Mr Dudley Trent was well received in bis two gangs, “The Longshoreman” aud “ Tbe.. King’s Minstray*:;- 'aud jrj oftoh.. case was accorded a decided encore, Mr irent "hap glcrndy eetablished hjaiself. as n favorite on tha concert platform. It is pleasing to know that be is 'permanently settled in tho dis t'riet, and he-will have tho best wishes for hia succees. Messrs Sidebottom and Erno3t Chrisp , presided at tho piano, and did excellent work. , Mr Denton, in thanking his patrons and those who assisted him musically, announced that a sacred concert would be given next Sunday evening after church, when a sacred programme would be submitted.
