George Bennett, engaged in gold-mining at Stillwater Creek, was -killed yesterday by a fall of earth. Bennett was 49 years of age, and leavos a wife and four children. Westport. last night. At the District Court William Joseph Williams, of Waimangaroa, ex-Justice of the Peace, was found guilty of indecent assault on a girl under 16, and was this morning sentenced by Judge Haselden to four years’ imprisonment. Counsel for the defence asked the Judgo to reserve a law point under tho well-known easo, Bex v. Blight, for the Supreme Couit, but the Judgo refused, and said counsel had his remedy by application to the AttorneyGeneral. In a previous indictment against Williams for a similar offence, the Judge directed the jury to return a verdiot of not guilty, as the depositions disclosed an attempt at a major offence, and the proceedings were statute barred.
