Duff hit two brilliant fourors off Hirst. Hill and Noblo fell in quiok succession, Hill sending a tame return to Hirst, and Noble giving an easy chance to Hayward in the slips. ■ The first wioket fell at 26, and the third at 86, and appearances were none too bright for the colonials when Arrustroni wont in to join Duff. Howavor, somi brilliant batting followed. The ‘Victorian opened with a brace of fourors, one a lucky snick, and the other a fiuo leg stroke Fifty appeared in 44 minutes, Armstrong hit nino off one of Hirst’s overs, which caused him to be taken off, and Blythe went on at his eDd. The score wao then 65. Four fonrers. a bye, and a boundary followed, but Duff’s time now came, he being snapped up at the wiokets. Ho had basted 1£ hours and hit seven tourers. Four for 96. Darling was smartly taken in the slips off Warren’s eeoond over, the latter having replaosd Jackson. Hopkins began his score with three fine fonrers off Blythe, aod this brought about a double change in the bowling, Haigh und Bosanquet taking up the atfcaok with the total at 125. Bosanquet had no length, and was not difficult to play, 10 being knocked off him in an over. Jackson returned to the crease, and off his first ball Hopkins was canght at the wickets. He had played a Sue innings of three-quarters of an hour. Six for 161. Armstrong, by admirable crioket, had raised bis total to 50 in 95 minutes, bnt soon lost Gregory, who was run out in attempting a second run off one of Armstrong's hits. Seven for 166. Eight men were placed on the off-side while Jackson was bowling to Grogory. At lunch the score was seven for 169. On resuming, McLeod was Armstrong’s partner, but was soap yorked by Haigh. Eight for 190. A run later Armstrong was easily takoa In the slips by Hayward, after a splendid innings lasting 180 minutes. The retiring batsman, whose score included eight fourers, was accorded a great reception on his return to the pavilion, Kelly and Laver were the two laßt men, buff only four tuds were added to the total whun Laver played Warren on to his pads, the ball running on to the wicket, and the innings closed for 195. England’s second innings opened quietly, McLeod and Armstrong being entrusted with the ball. Only four singles were scored off the first six overs, but after that the batsmen got going merrily till Kelly snapped up Fry off Armstrong, One for 80.

The weather remained lovely throughout the day. and it is estimated that fully 22,000 people were present during the afternoon. "With Fry in play was very slow, only eleven runs being soored in half an hour. Then play brightened somewhat, but it @feok an hour to bring up 40 on the board. /The bowling was good, and neither batsmaD, bobh'of whom were playing steadily, ielb disposed to . take any risks, W hen Hoble relieved McLeod runs came faster, and three fourars wore scored off four •overs. Runs, however, wore still kept down by splendid fielding, many being saved on the leg side off Armstrong. Fry was out hitting round at a ball. He had. batted an hour and 40 minutes.
One for 80. Tyldesley, when one, gave a hard ebanca at the wickets off Noble. Hayward’s half century appeared afc the end of 125 minutes’ play* Then for half an hour he did not score. Tho hundred appeared on the board at 5.30 p.m., and then Laver relieved Noble, and a spell of quiet cricket was relieved by Armstrong bavmg ten knocked off one over. With his total at 60 Hayward senfc a skier off Armstrong to Hopkins at mid-off. Ho was bailing 2£houra, and played a fanltlesa game.

The satno batsman then got Armstrong away twice for four, bringing his total to 62 and the grand total to 169, when play ceased for tho day. Armstrong bowled unchanged for over ithree hours.
