MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.
DRAINING SEWAGE INTO THE SEA.
(Pen Press Associafcwa-) Wellington, last night. The executive committee of the Municipal Association discussed on Monday last a remit from the Timaru Borough Council, urging combined action to resist any attempts by Harbor Boards to restcict existing rights of municipalities to drain surface water and sewage matter into the sea. After discussion the committee restricted the resolution to surface water, and so passed it. To-day another meeting of the committee was held to reconsider the matter, counsel instructed by the Timaru Council being present. After hearing counsel it was decided to reinstate the words “ and sewage matter ” in the resolution. This morning the matter was brought before the Premier. He said the Government would be mainly guided by the opinion of the health officers. So long as discharge into the harbors did not affect the health of the people nobody could take exception to it, but the moment it dfd so tbe sooner it was stopped tbe better.
