EDUCATION BOARD.
{Special to Times.) Napier, last night. Tbe Education Board meoting was held Co-duy. The Department enquired if any inquiry had been made into recent fire at Matawhero school.
The Secretary stated that the police had made inquiries and had fouud no proof of attempted arson. He bad also asked the Committee to make investigations. It was decided to reply that the police had made inquiries, and forwarded their report to the Justice Department; also that when the Committee’s report was received a copy would be forwarded to the Education Department. Miss Baozi wa3 appointed assistant mistress at Gisborne, the Committee to be informed that Miss Brown’s name was not forwarded, as she was not a certificated teacher.
Application is to be made for a school at Haiti as soon as plans are approved by the Committee set up to consider the purchase of land at Gisborne.
Tbe Kaitaratahi matter defining the school boundaries is being attended to.
On the recommendation of the architect it was decided to grant a sum of £2O for the purpose of gas stoves for heating buildings at Gisborne, which are being at present utilised for temporary educational purposes.
The appointment of Mr F. J. Wilson as Building Inspector to the Board at Gisborne was confirmed. Matawhero to be informed that the sanction of the Department is to be obtained to sell the teacher's condemned residence, and thß request re house allowance has been referred to the Department. - Waerenga a-hika : The matter of spouting and repairs was referred to the architect to have carried out. An application for a bell was refused.
Karaka: The matter of additions to the teacher's residence to remain in abeyance. Te Aral: An estimate of the cost of washhouse to be forwarded to the Board.
Awanui: Miss Neill’s resignation was accepted. The report of the select committee on the Board’s regulations with regard to Bchool management was adopted, also amended scholarship regulations and the Board’s general regulations. In connection with the latter, the principal alteration related to tho punishment of scholars as follows :—Corporal punishment to be inflicted in extreme cases only, and then by the head or sole teaober after due deliberation and inquiry. Should the head teacher at any time depute an assistant teacher to administer corporal punishment that fact must bo entered in the log book, and the reason for and amount of punishment must in each oase bo entered in' the standard lesson book. In the case of girls, however, it is directed that corporal punishment should be administered by a female teacher only. The Board is of opinion that it is desirable that punishment in some other form should be administered to girls whenever such punishment is found necessary. It was also decided to insert a clause stipulating that any broach of the regulations as a whole would subject a ieaohcr to censure or dismissal.
