SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ ASSOCIATION.
A conference of school committees of this district was held in the Gisborne J Distriot High School od Saturday after- j noon. There were present Messrs Graham, I Churoh, Colley (Gisborne), McLeod, Hogg, Henson (Mangapapa), Bryant lOrmond), Daulton (Te Arai), Lougher (Waerenga-a-hika), Roke (Whatatutu), and Brocklebank (Matawbero). Mr A. Graham was olecled chairman, and explained the object of the meeting, which was to considec the advisability of forming an Association of School Committees, and the questions of obtaining direct representation on the Hawke’a Bay Edu- ( cation Board, and o£ forming a separate Board for the district. The latter question, he thought, was not a pressing matter. The smaller Education Boards did not attract the best teachers, and even were Wairoa to join them in this matter the district would be very small. In regard to the question of having direct representation on the Hawke’s Bay Board, ha stated that if they could prevail upon someone of the gentlemen who took such a prominent partin education "matters here to allow himself to be nominated, there would be no difficulty in electing him, He thought it was rather late to move in the matter this year. The third question, School Committee's Association, had been brought under his notice by Mr McLeod, Chairman of the Mangapapa School Committee. Friction had occasionally arisen between the Education Board aud local school committees, but of merely a geographical nature. Still the present system of administration was not satisfactory, and the growing dissatisfaction throughout the ooiony with the Education Department was bound to bring a change in the Ad ministration of tho Act. An Association as proposed /could watoh the trend of events, and help to evolve a good workable scheme.
Mr McLeod -proposed that the school oommittees of the East Coast district form themselves into ah Association. Anyone who had been connected with school oommittees knew the difficulties that faced them in dealing with the Board. If the Government were going to do away with Education Boards there was a probability of them being consulted, If they were unanimous they could got direct representation on the Board, but he thought the matter had better be dealt with in oommittee.
Mr Brocklobank seconded the motion, which upon being put to the meeting was Carried unanimously.
It was decided that a sub committee be apooiutod to draw up a constitution, and aubmititto the diffe-ent school committees Messrs Graham, Daulton, Brockiebank and McLeod were appointed a committee. The Conference then adjourned for a month.
