DARING BURGLARIES.

AT WELLINGTON AND DUNEDIN.

(Par Press Association.) Wellington, last nigh!

A daring and cleverly planned robbery took place at the residence of Mr R. P Collins, Brougham street, at about halfpast one this morning. Collins and his wife were awakened by a movement of the door of their bedroom and heavy footsteps descending the stairs. There was a light burning in the room at tbo time, and thtß seems to have enabled the burglar to carry oat his work with great promptitude. He seems to have gooa direct to the receptacle in which the Coffins’, jewellery was plaoed, and also to tbe resting-place of Mrs Collins’ jewels. He made a clean sweep of both, oarrying away plunder to the extent of five or six hundred pounds. This included some valuable diamond rings. The police were soon informed, and several arrests have been made on suspicion. Footprints in the garden are said to be the only clue to the offenaer. Dunedin, last night. . The railway station at Mosgiel was burglariously entered this morning. The safe was blown open by dynamite, and some £9 stolen. Two explosions were used—one to open the outer and one the inner- compartments. There were two safes in the station, one above the other, set in concrete. The burglars selected the largest as likely to prove the most productive, but in this they were mistaken, the bulk of cash being in the smaller safe.
