CHINESE BOYCOTT

By, Electric TclegraDh.—Pen Press 'Asaociation. Recaivcd 11.1 p.m., Jane 29. Pekin, Jane 29. Chinese merchants at Penang joined the boycott o£ American goods. E MPLOYERS’ DEPUTATION PREMIER INTERVIEWED. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, lost night. To-night the deputation from the Employers’ Federation continued their discussion with the Premier on matters con- i nectod with labor. With reference to compensation for accidents, it was suggested that there should be an examination of injured employees by medical men appointed by the Government, and persons injured should periodically report themselves to the Government officials. It wa3 also represented that various technical requests made by the Trades Conference would greatly hamper owners of engineering works. The Premier, in reply, urged that both sides should stand by the Arbitration Act. I As a body the workers were all right, bat some of their leaders did not look far enough ahead, and would lead their fellows ioto trouble. While employers had prospered, workers were in the same position as they were years ago. It was the Government’s duty to hold the scales between employers and employees, and be just. Ho would be no party to favor one side at the expense of the other. He knew that industry could not bear much 1 more than it bad at present to bear.
