OPIUM SMOKING

A police raid oti a green grocar’s shop in Grey street last Dight resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of opium smoking utensils. Two Chinese, named Jimmy Long and Ah Gen, who were found at the time in possession of opium in a form suitable for smoking, were charged with this offence to-day before Mr. Kettle, S.M. Preserving thqt typically stolid attitude of the Chinese (hey determined pot to answer in any way to the charge, but when they found that iu spite of them the oase was going on they pleaded guilty. As Long bad been convicted of a breach of the Opium Smoking Prevention Act, he was fined XlO or a month’s imprisonment, while Gen was fined £5 or 14 days’ irnprhonmeDj.
