FATHER HAYS’ MISSION

(To the Editor of the Times.)

Sir attended the lecture given by the Rev. Father Hays last evening I was’struck by the temperate manner in Which he expounded bis views upon tho temperance question—such a change from the tactics employed by the fanatical prohibitionists of our Waiapu district. One point ho was very clear upon was that the vote was given for everyone to exercise, and was a special privilege, and it was not part and parcel of the clergy’s business to attempt in any way to coerce anyone. it will be interesting to watch the doings of fhe clerav daring the coming electioneerftSSSt and see if they will profit by their fellow countryman a laudanle advice. In regard to the case of the young man Who was Stated by one speaker to have fnished his existence in the Auckland harw I was always given to understand that an old Latk« proverb tells us “Of the dead let nothing but-wbat is good be spoken. i, great social question was (Bo minds of the public no ' rnatbetwfat our views may be upon the temperance question -both private per•sons and matters should be entirely left out of the discussion, and this would be more in accord with Father Hays’ mission r oc jam certain the Rev. Father will bo nnrtv to Such measures. —Yours, etc., do party 10 6nOD OBM OND SETTLER.. ; ; I—=> Hi-1
