TOKOMARU BAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) June 19 i*rThe Hospital Ball was a complete success in every way, and will bo long'remoaibercd &s ono of tho meet sociablo gatherings held ou the Coast. The proceeds amounted to over .£2O, and as the expenses aro small with the Government ~ subsidy of 24s in the £, quite a nice sum will be" handed over to the bospita'. The good things provided by all the Bottlers made up a most excellent supper. Over sixty sat down to the first table. The Natives gave the hull and dining room free, which added considerably to the success achieved. The football match between Woipiro | and Tokomaru on Saturday was a well- f; I contested game, and fast from start to | finish, resulting in a win for Tokotnoru by eight points to three. This is the first, game Waipiro has played this season, and they look like giving a good account of y I themselves before the season is over. I Mr Whyte, of prohibition fame, is visiting the Coast and forming committees I wbore he can. f - I Mr McCurdy gave a most interesting I lecture here on Saturday night. I Another of the oldest Coast residents ‘ ] passed away last week in the person of . I Mrs McGuire. She has been staying with tA I her daughter, Mrs F. F. Powell, for some I years at the Mata, and for some time past I has been quite an invalid. Kirkpatrick. Tho Waipiro orchestra accompanied many of tho items, and .also kindly provided the musio for the dancs that followed. .
.WHANGARA'. June 19. Tho Paikia football club played their 'first match of the season on Saturday lest, it being against a Tolngo Bay team. The i going was good and the weather was all ‘ that good be desired. After a hard and fast game the visiters were defeated by 21 to 6, the Tolago men proving too much for their opponents. The Paikia club was represented by the following players : —D. Leach (captain), Mackay, Hinski, Hauri Peao, Nohonoko, Haki Leach, Kepa Leach, Tuara, Rang!, Waho, Hirini.Hopu, Sidney, Tutukohi, S. Kennedy.. Tho successful scorers for tho Whangara team vjj. were Henri and Hoki Leach. Paikia’a next venture will he against Tolago on Ist July. In tbo meantimb-lft practice match has been arranged with Kaiti City to be played in a day or two. t .. A mob of 1100 sheep passed boro yes- . . The roads are hardening a little with the improved weather condition. Tho pakarao rivor is crossablo for horsemen at low water only, but is hardly ’safe or wheel traffic. HICKS BAY. : :u The weather boro during tho past month has beon very wet, and on Judo Bth a very heavy thunderstorm passed over tho Bay; Both rivers rose hank high, and the native dwellings on tho so.uth end of the bay wsra'f flooded by tho overflow of river water, while the bridge was carried away. Huge slips came down on the road to To Araroa, and for two days we were completely cut - off from tho outside world. The mailman</. was unable to get through owing to the slips and the swollen state of the river at Te Araroa. A huge sea in the bay at the - time the storm was raging washed higher up on the beach than has been seen for a < long time, end this no doubt helped to cause the flood. Tho local carpenter, a native, is kept busy, as tho framewoik of another house 7 is being erect&d. fA shooting party “ did ” the Bay a few days ago, but they report a scarcity of grams, ODiy about two braco being peppred. One of the party had a rather wet experience. While attempting to cross a creek -q by hanging on to a fence, the fence gave way, and bo was sent head first into the creek in a few feet of water, fortunately without iDjury.

Mr McCurdy, the Farmers’ Union travelling representative, passed through hero on tho 16th inst., hound for the Coast and Gisborne. He had bad a rough and ** wet journey, and was for more than 24 hours without food, and cu tbo night of the 15th inet. ha was obliged to sleep out the wet.
