LATE NEW ZEALAND.
'(Per- Press Association.) Nelson, last night. The Supremo Court sittings opened today, The Chief Justice congratulated the district on the few cases of crime. There were charges against three persons. E. Snow, of Karamea, was charged with receiving gold stolen from a hotel there, but the prisoner under sentence for the burglary denied that Snow had any of the proceeds, and said Snow was drunk when the robbery was committed. By direction of the Court the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty. Annie G Lewis and her daughter Ethel Lewie were charged with sna ing J 829 from the house of a neighbor at Sandy Bay, the mother being also charged with receiving. ■ Ethel pleaded guilty, and was granted probation of 12 months, and ordered to pay six guineas towards the costs. The jury found the mother not guilty on both counts, but the judge spoke very strongly to the woman, disagreeing with the jury as to the second count of receiving. Then he discharged her.
Dnnedin, last night. ' James McQnaen, 24 years of age, shunter at Port Chalmers, met with a fatal accident to-day. Ho was engaged shunting a waggon at the mouth of tho tunnel, and{~ must have fallen, tho wheels of the passing over the body. He was attended to, but died from shock and injuries.
Hokitika, last night. A meeting of early arrivals on the West Coast to-night resolved to hold a social reunion on July 4th of all pioneers reaching here between 1864 and 1866. An invitation will be extended to the Premier,, who was one of the pioneers of the district.
