DETERMINED SUICIDE. (Pen Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. Charles Herbert. Baydell, secondhand dealer, in Great King street, appears to have committed suicide in a determined manner between Saturday night and this morning. He was last seen on Saturday uight. This morning his shop was not opened. About noon a passer by noticed a strong smell of gas and the police being informed entered by the back window. | Baydell was found upstairs undressed and in bed. A piece of tubing ran from the gas jet underneath the bedclothes and lay close to his face, the gas being turned full on. Deceased was 33, a widower, and has his mother living. An inquest will be held. SUPREME COURT. At the Supreme Court, James Shannon, alias Johnson, who had pleaded guilty at Oamaru to theft from.the person, was sentenced by Mr Justice Williams to two years’ hard labour. *' The prisoner had a bad record, having served sentences at Auckland, Tirnaru and Waimate. William Quan, 24 years, who bad pleaded guilty to theft from the person, also received two years, his character being bad generally.
