ALLEGED TOTE BETTING.

'(Pen. Press Association.), Auckland, yesterday. j In the Police Court Barnett and Grant, Christchurch bookmakers, were charged with making bets dependent on tote odds. M. H. Quick deposed to making bets with defendants by telegraph, and receiving from them a cheque for £162 16s 4d. J Counsel for defendants objected to witness I stating on what basis the bets wore made. I Ho submitted that the evidence had not I connected defendants with the Barnett I and Grant to whom the telegrams were I sent, while the telegrams in each case, though timed oarlier, were not forwarded | until some time after the races were run, I in whioh case he submitted there could I have been no arrangement. In reply it I was pointed out that defendants ratified [ the bets by sending cheques. The magis- I trate, Mr Kettle, said ho waoted authority on the proposition that the telegraph I office official was an: agent to accept bets I or make contracts. Matthew Barnett and Peter Grant, Christchurch aud Dunedin bookmakers operating as a firm, were convicted by Mr C. O. Kettle, S.M„ at the Police Court on two charges of having illegally laid totalisator odds. Mr Reed, for the defendants, explained how tho proceedings were first set in motion. He said that his clients had reported and given information to the telegraph authorities that telegrams making bets were being sent after races were ruD. It had been understood by his clients j that any information given by them would not be used against them. His clients had then been proceeded against on this charge.
