BEER DUTY.
HUNGRY RATS DEFACE THE STAMPS 1
(Per, Press Association.) Timaru, last night.
At tho Magistrate’s Court to-day, E. Ward, licensee, aud P. Wiseman, cellurman of the Club Hotel, were prosecuted on charges, which amounted to one against the cellarman, of removing tho duty stamps from seven hogsheads of beer with intent to defraud the revenue, contrary to section 22 of the Boer Duty Act. On May 20th a cadet in the Customhouse, inspecting the hotel cellars, found seven casks ; three wore tapped and four untapped, and there was not a vestige of a stamp except a small corner on one cask. Tho dofenoe was that tho stamps were removed by rats with whieh the cellar is infected (over 400 were killed there in nine mODtbs). Evidence was given of such removal of stamps by rats at the same collar before, and also at another hotel. The Magistrate thought the explanation not a very probable one, but it was possible that rats took the stamps off. Ho could only give the Scotch verdict “ Not proven."
