COUNCIL MATTERS.

(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —Evidently Councillor Lysnar and his friond “Euphrates” do not relish being dosed with Councillor Lysnar’s own physic. It is a weil known fact that for successfully “ playing to the gallery ” that gentleman is without a rival. Your corres-

pondont complains because a certain new councillor put in some hard work to secure a seat on the Council; but in my humble opinion the young councillor deserves credit inasmuch as ho fought the election singte-hftnded, and had neither newspaper nor anonymous correspondents to push him along. your correspondent’s Complaint regarding councillors rushing into print may not bo altogether groundless ; but what about Councillor Lysnar? On all questions he usurps the floor of 'tho Council' Chambers, and, not content with that, monopolises columns of both newspapers. If your correspondent will road tho history of any nation, or even of this colony, ho will find that it abounds with innumerable instances of statesmen, whose

names are EO’uay revatuu, uviug uuanou from office by charlatans and political hucksters, who for the time being enjoyed a popularity, but whose names are now forgotten ; sq that an enjoyment of popularity can never bo urged as an indisputable proof of usefulness or ability.—Vours tr ° ly ’ JOHN SOMERVELL. (To the Editor Gisborne Times:); Sir,— -Having conceived a shrewd suspicion as to the identity of your correspondent “ Euphrates,'’ if that scribe will throw 1 off the mask of anonymity I shall possibly be able to prove that the manufacture of 11 fro" froth” is more in his line than mine. In the meantime your readers will, in fairness, admit that Cr Lysnar’s present popularity is no argument that I should sacrifice my principles in order that I may : share in the 11 mob applause, ’ nor that I should seek that gentleman’s patronage as ameans of retention of office.—l am, eto.l 1 JOHN SHERIDAN.
