In tho blue blackness of the night tho ships stood out something more than spectres, something loss than fearful citadels.
The Russians wero edging north, but the powerful Japanese fleet, in a horizontal lino across their bows, proved an oSoctive barrier, linked with guns. * , At 8 o’clock the Japanese destroyers and torpedo boats advanced like a cloud of locusts. The sea was swept with the pale tracks of innumerable searchlights. Tho large warships’ great cannon covered tho attack. Tho Russian fleet continued to respond. The fighting was fierce and intense till 2 ia the morning. Thereafter the torpedoboats wero lot loose. There seemed to be scores and scores of them.
The night’s work rosultod in the sinking of tho Alexander 111., Oslyabia, Navarin, another voasol and three gunboats. At dawn on Sunday the Japanese, at closer range, were pressing tho Russians to tho north-west of Nagata. The battle continued to rage fiercely,but the Russians were in no strategic position wherein they wore able to effectively resist.
The Mikado complimented Admiral Togo and the fleet on accomplishing an unprecedented feat in tho annihilation of the enemy. He was glad the officers and men had responded to the spirit of their ancestors. The future war might be long, but he hoped the loyalty, bravery and faithfulness of his subjects would secure a successful result. Tho best strategy and great courage had annihilated the enemy. Answering the nation’s congratulations, he sayß: “We appreciate deeply your splendid success.”
The Mikado has permitted Admiral DiebogatoS and other commanders to telegraph to the Czar a report of tho battle and list of casualties. He allows the captured officers to return to Russia on parole. Reuter’s Agency at Tokio reports that ths total Japanese casualties are under 800.
