SPORTING.

GREAT NORTHERN MEETING.

'(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. Thera is every indication of the weather being wet for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s Winter Meeting to-morrow and the course is bound to be heavy. A large number of visiting horses will compete, and thero are also a groat many Southorn sportsmen in town for the meeting. There is keen speculation in regard to the hurdles, the principal event to be decided to-morrow. Cavalry is favorite, but Trumpery, Miss King, Lady Huns and othors have a large following. My fancy is for Trumpery, with Hakaria for an outside chance. Defoe should win the Maiden Steeplechase, and Delania or Tuleika the Cornwall Handicap. Sally Horner may run well in the Pony Race. The only Gisborne horse engaged at the meeting is Morehu, which is entered for the Maiden Hurdles. Messrs D. J. Barry and G. Oman are among the visitors from the East Coaßt.
