REVOLTING CASES.
WELL-DESERVED SENTENCES,
(Pec Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. At the Supreme Court Albert Prencieo, aged 23, and Jas. Bernard, found guilty of rape under revolting circumstances, were sentenced. Judge Williams remarked that the maximum penalty was life imprisonment and three floggings. Although floggings were very repugnant to him, if it was not inflicted in this ease they might just as well be wiped off the Statute Book alto gether. The circumstances under which tho crime was committed were of a most disgusting nature. Words conld not ex. press the feelings of every docent member of the community. Each was sentenced to 12 years and to receive a floggiDg of 25 strokes.- Frederick Rodgers, 25 years, who accompanied tho previous ..prisoners, pleaded guilty to damaging the house and furniture of the woman assaulted, and was sentenced to three years’ hard labor. Francis Edward CuddeD, 24 years, who pleaded guilty to rape at Winton was sentenced to ten years’ hard labor.
