MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS.

OPENING CEREMONY,

The long-looked-for opening of tho Gisborne municipal abattoirs took place yesterday afternoon, in tho presence of a large gathering of townspeople and visitors, and passed off most successfully. The buildings, whioh are situoted noar the Awapuni lagoon, on tho Waikanae, are of a most up-to-date character, sufficient to meet tho increasing requirements of the district for many years to come. The cost of tho abattoirs, with extras, etc, was slightly over £4OOO, and one and all must admit that the money has been well spent. Tho contractor for the buildingß was Mr W. O. Skeet, Mr James Brown having the control of the ironwork and Mr F. Hall the. plumbing. The plastering work was nbly carried out by Mr S- McMurray. Mr C. R. Neale will bo manager, Mr A. Kinnimoot head slaughterman, Mr A. Gregg second, and Mr G. Ho worth third. All the appointments in connection with the abattoirs are of a most complete character, and were greatly admired by the visitors who inspected tho works. Tho oponiDg ceremony took place at hnlf-past ten, and amongst those present were His Worship the Mayor, Hon. Jae. Carroll, and many members of the Borough Council, Harbor Board, and County Council. After tho visitors had been shown over the premises, several sheep and bullocks were killed with a view of showing the facilities which the works afforded. Several short speeches were made, Tho Mayor wished prosperity to tho Council’s undertaking, und hoped tho manager and inspector would fulfil his duty unflinchingly. Hu pointed cut that all moat to bo supplied in tho abattoir radius must be killed at the abattoirs and bear the Government brand “ A.B. No. 20,” Gisborne beiDg the twontiolfi abattoirs to bo established in the colony under the Act that provided that towns of tho size of Gisborne must be provided with this convenience. The Hod. Mr Carroll said all could participate in the satisfaction at tho establishment of abattoirs. He congratulated the district on the acquirement of this moans of helping to insure the health of the community. The visitors were driven to and from the works m Redstone’s brakes.
