DEPUTATIONS.

;(Per Press 'Association.)

Dunedin, lastlnight. The Premier told a deputation from the Society for the Protection of 'Women and Children bo was firmly of opinion our laws should be brought up to date in respect to the period during which informations could be laid. He thought it should be at least three months, as in England, aud would consider tbe propriety of making it even longer. Iu the meantime he was against the deputation’s proposition that a girl on registering an illegitimate child should state the namo of the father to the registrar, because some girls might use it as a means of revenge, but he thought the girl might disclose the name to the registrar, leaving the latter, before putting the namo on the record, to | call on the person named to meet the | oharge. The Premier told a University deputation that the payment of a £750 grant to the School of Mineß would only be continued for three years, but the Government would continue one such school in the North and another in the South Is land. He approved of the curtailment of underground services for mining certificates, thinking five years too long. He told the Schools Association that the actuaries’ roport on the superannuation fund gave only £lO after paying increased contributions between 55 and 65 years, but he thought the difficulties were not insuperable. He intended to convene a conference of teachers and school managers to thresh out .the question with a view to legislation this session.
