FIRE IN COOK STREET.
MR BIGGAR’S HOUSE DESTROYED
Shortly after five o’olock last evening a five-roomed house at the corner of Gladstone road and Cook street was totally destroyed by fire. The alarm was first given bv the upper bell, and was promptly taken up by the town bell. Before being discovered the fire had a good hold, and hardly anything was saved. The building and furniture were insured in the Standard Office for £2OO. The cause of the fire is unknown. The house was owned and occupied by Mr J. Biggar and family, and at the time of the outbreak that gentleman was away in/town. Mr Biggar is a very heavy loser, and the insurance on the house and furniture does not nearly compensate him for the damage done. He had a very valuaable collection of books in the house, all of which wero burnt. The Fire Brigade were promptly on the scene, but could do nothing except in the way of preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.
