UNFAIR TREATMENT OF BRITISH

London, May 23. in tho House of Lords Lord Muskerrv complained that tho Philippine,Canary and Marshall Islands were closed against British shipping; also tho British ships were not allowed to participate in the coasting trade of Belgium, France, Russia, Italy, Poftugal, Spain, Brazil, and the United States. Lord Lansdowno replied that it was extremely unfair for the British coasting trade to bo open to foreigners, who reiuse to reciprocate. If we preserved our coast- I mg trade exclusively to ourselves the remedy would prove disadvantageous. We should lose our foreign re-shipment trade. With reference to the Marshalls Germany Tcfn,! re ?°ffmsed that the convention of 1896 entitled British and German shipping in the Pacific to absolute equality of treatment.
