(Pen Press 'Association.)': Auckland, last night. In the Supreme Court Samuel Blair and Thomas Kennedy were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for assault and rob- " bery. Harold Hay was found guilty of “ breaking and entering at Dargaville, and' remanded for sentence. Accusod had been dismissed by a young lady with whom he had been keeping company. He broke into a blacksmith’s shop and stole a revolver. which ho displayed in the presence of the young lady, evidently with the intention of frightening her. The Trades and Labor Council has discussed a proposal from the Wellington Council to ask the Government to prohibit the manufacture of white lead in New Zealand owing to its injurious effects on workers. A motion that the Council was not organised to interfere with the progress L of trade was rejected in favor of an amend- ■ ment supporting the Wellington Council. Before the Land Commission at Taheke, George Grover, storekeeper, advocated the freehold. Michael O’Connell, a settler, favored lease in perpetuity. At Oheawai, John Clarke, a settler, and chairman of the Farmers’ Union, said the leasehold had been a wonderful assistance to settling the district. He favored a settler obtaining the freehold when he was able to pay for it.
Percy Whital, a well-dressed young man, who is credited by the police with the aliases of Captain de Courcey and Earl of Northesk, was oharged at the Police Court with forging a cheque for £250 on the Bank of New Zealand in the name of Radnor, Other charges are ponding. Accused was remanded for eight days. The University Connoil Unanimously appointed J. P. Grossman, M.A., lecture in economics.
