LONDON .WOOL SALES

Byj Electric Telegraph!—Per Press Association^—Copyright-, London, May 17. The wool sales closed with spirited competition. Prices were the highest of the series. Thef sales included the following clips : Mako Hid, Marorangi 12 l-Bd, Moeraki lo3d. At the tallow sales 1950 casks were offered, and 850 sold. Prices are unchanged. Wheat : An Australian cargo sold at 31s 9d.

Sydney, May 18. At the monthly wool sales a small catalogue was offered. There was active competition. Late rates were fully maintained, with a tendency to Improve. Deceived 10.47 p.m., May 18.

The wool sales are active with very firm competition. Scoureds slackened somewhat owing to less demand from Japan, whioh bought largely at recent sales. Hides : The market for stouts and kips is firm ; heavy and medium weights are irregular ; sloppy and scored are k Pcent lower.

Tallow : The market is dull. There is a fall of 6s on last week's rates.

"(Per, Press Association.) ’ • Napier, last night. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company has received a cable from London as follows : “ Frozen meat prices unohanged.’’

The following cablegram was received by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company yesterday from their London offioe ;—“ Wool: . The market closed strong for all sorts. Since close of last sales prices are higher by lid to 2d for fine greasy crossbred, 2d to 3d for medium greasy crossbred, Id to lid for coarse greasy crossbred, and id to Id for merino lambs. Following are the average ourrent values in London of the undernoted descriptions of New Zealand wool : Good merino ISid, medium 12d, inferior 9£d ; fine crossbred 13id, medium 12id, ooarse 40’s 10id, ditto 36’s lOd. New Zealand wheat: Prices on the spot ex granary, per 4961 b, 32s 9d long-berried and 32s 3d short-berried. For parcels, c.i.f., 29s 3d ; handy-sized cargoes, 30a 9d. New Zealand oats : Sparrowbills, per 3841 b, ex granary, 19s Od; for c.i.f., 18s 9d. Danish, ex granary, per 3201 b, 17s 6d.”

MATAWHBEO SALES. The Matawhero stock sales took place yesterday under most unfavorable weather conditions. The heavy rain throughout the night and during the morning made the yards in a sloppy condition, and the rain and mud caused tho sheep to bo soen at a disadvantage. Messrs Common, Shelton and Co., and Dalgety and Co- commenced their sale at 10.30. The yarding comprised a little' under 200 head of cattle, mostly beef bullocks, and a few pens of sheep. There was a poor demand for cattle. Forward bullocks brought £4 17s, and fat bullocks £6 15s. Several lots were passed in, and were disposed of privately after the sale. A pen of 100 big woolly lambs brought 11s Bd, and ewes 9s.

Messrs Williams and Kettle and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co. held their sale at 11.30. There was a large yarding of sheep, and competition was fairly keen. Tho following prices were realised :—258 lambs 10a, 45 two and four-tooth wethers 16s, 66 forward wethers 16s, 28 fat ewes 13s 3d, 41 lambs (small) 7s 3d, 27 two and four-tooth wethers (in forward condition) 16s, 32 ewes 7s 3d, 139 big lambs lie lOd, 14 fat and forward wethers 17s 4d, 143 fat wethers (very heavy) 19s 9d, a pen of ewes 13s 6d, 89 fresh full-mouth ewes 12s 4d, 48 ewes 11s, 23 fat wethers 18s 3d, 41 ewes 12s. 47 ewes 10s Id, 452 woolly lambs 11s 6d, 45 forward ewes (empty) 12s sd, 117 ewes 13s Id, 91 ewes 13s 3d, 80 fat ewes 16s 66,71 fat ewes 14s, 111 fat wethers 18s 6d, 76 ewes 7s, 39 fat forward ewes 11s, 65 ewes 11s, 280 fat wethers 16s 9d, 200 two tooth wethers 16s, 206 do. 15s 7d, 500 do. 15s 2d, 600 lambs 103, 250 fat and forward wethers 17s, 216 do. 16s lOd, 276 ewes 15s 6d.
