.(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. The captain of the AdJou was in town to-day, and communicated the loss of the ship to the owners. The crew remained on the Etinemoa to-day, and visited Capo Saunders lighthouse on her. In the evening a number of them were entertained at the Sailors’ Rest, They leave for Sydney by the Waikare to-morrow. The captain had no suggestion to make with respect to I the Government depots on the islands.
The Benevolent Trustees intend asking the Premier to take steps to set aside the poll tax charged on Chinese immigrants for the purpose of payiog their passage back to China. There are from 12 to 14 now in institutions in Caversham, and an application on behalf of another was received to day.
Christchurch, last night. ■ The Council of the League of Wheelmen upheld the appeal of the Christohuroh Cycling and Motor Club against the decision of the North Canterbury centre of the League, which instructed the club to award first prize in the Koyal Enfield Cup Race, run on Good Friday, to George Sutherland, ■, instead of M. Randolph. The conditions of the race were altered by the stewards just bsfore the race started, and the league I aeld that the stewards were justified in I their action. I
Wellington, last night. Sir Robert Stout has been elected Chair man of the Victoria College Council. A movement is on foot to make a citizens’ presentation to Mr Aitken, M.H.R., the late Mayor. A public meetfog was held in connection with the matter to-day, and a committee appointed to make arrangements.
