A charge against thirteen sailors belonging to the Cumbcrmere for combining to impede the navigation of tho ship was dismissed. The bench ordered the cancellation of articles of tho men, who contended they were given short and bad supplies of food, and sometimos assaulted. A now agreement between the Butter Export Committee and the Shipping Companies has been Bigned.
Perth, May 17. The Commission rooommends that steps be taken by the Agent-General to secure a substantial reduction of the present excessive freights. If the ring remains obdurate they suggest that the Government advertise for tenders for rate on freights, or offer a subsidy to a regular line of cargo steamerß with England. Senator Matheson, who has returned from a visit to England, says feeling against any tax on food is extremely strong throughout England. A. coming election seemed probable, and hardly any supporters of Chamberlain will be returned, and under these circumstances preferential trade is hardly worth disoussing as a serious question. Regarding the proposed immigration of agriculturists Mr Matheson thinks that Australia generally is more anxious for them than they for Australia. Received 9,47 p.m., May 17. London, May 17. The international Conference on the question of protection of workmen being held at Berne adopted the basis of an international convention to prohibit white phosphorous matches. Lord Brassey’s 3unbeam, Lord Crawford’s Bathalla, the German syndicate’s Hamburg, Mr Marshall’s Atlantic (Captain Rarr), which is tho American favorite, and seven other American yaehts, are starting on the course from Sandy Hook to Lizard Point to-day to race for the Kaiser’s eup. Received 1.15 a.m., May 18. Sydney, May 17. The Anjou’s oargo was fully insured in English offices. The hull was also insured.
Mr O’Sullivan was favorably impressed with New Zealand. It appeared a well ordered and prosperous country with a wonderful climate. If New South Wales had half the rainfall it would be a veritable paradise. He was struck with Wellington as a rapidly improving centre of commerce. Ho speaks highly of the treatment he received.
