POLITICAL.
(Port ; Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. Mr James Allen, addressing his constituents at Milton, dealt chiefly with the Shop Bill, the increase of debt, and depreciation of New Zealand consols, compared with those of Australian States. He attributed the latter as possibly due to the indiscreet legislation, to the large borrowing policy, and to the action of the loan agents in regard to the 1904 loan. He censured the Government for the South Opawa scandal. Dealing with lands he warned lease in perpetuity holders that the time would come, if Socialistic ideas beoame paramount, when the leaseholds would be endangered by the contract being broken and a periodical valuation imposed. A vote of confidence was carried unanimously.
Preliminary steps were taken last night to form a National Educational Defence League for Otago.
