AUCKLAND NEWS.

Per Press Association. Auokland, last night.

The Coroner, Mr Gresham, held an enquiry at Avondale Asylum as to the oause of the death of. a male patient, 71 years of age, on Snturday week. The man was knocked down by another patient while being exercised, aud three of his ribs were broken in the fell. The post mortem disclosed well-marked senile decay, three broken ribs, and an abscess on the pluera. The jury found the cause of death was the abscess, which resulted from the fractured ribs, accidentally sustained through a fall while struggling with another patient. No blame was attachable to aDy of the officials. >

Io the Arbitration Court, when the ship, yacht and boat-builders’ dispute was called on, tho employers objected to tho irregular procedure, as in the cases previously dismissed. Tho Union withdrew the case. Asked if the old agreement would hold good until another case was brought, the present Union being of a different name from-that under which febe agreement previously existed, Mr Justice Chapman replied that the new Union could not enforce it. He would not like to express an opinion hastily.

At the Supreme Court criminal sessions, Judge Edwards, in charging the Grand Jury, regretted the very large number of cases (39). Tbo frequency of breaking and entering seemed to indicate that the sentences in tho past for this crime had been unduly lenient.
