Obituary : Henry Barber, head of the well-known'firm of Barber and Co., butchers, Wellington. On Saturday morning deceased ruptured a blood vessel in the head. He gradually sank. He leaves a widow and family of sis grown-up children. He was aged 67.
The Chief Justice this morning decided a case in which a question arose of the right of his natural mother to tho property of her son (deceased), who had been adopted by others. It appeared that tho adopted parents had died, and their adopted son had inherited their property and died without, leaving a will. His natural mother (he was bd illegitimate) claimed the property left, but the Chief Justice, while admitting that the law was somewhat indifferent, ruled that tho act of adoption extinguished the natural mother’s claims. Tho ca-o arose out of tho interpretation of the w’ll of W. L. Carter. . Dunedin, last night.
The Registrar of tho District Court at Naseby dismissed the creditors' petition to have John Ewing, of St. Bathau’s, d<dared a bankrupt. The matter is likely to go to the Supreme Court. A private cable reports tbo success of of “the trado’s” appeal in tho Chalmers’ Licensing case. Lun Toy, who was found in the Oval yesterday in a weak state, died at the hoe-' pita!. He had been an inmate of the Benevolent Institution.
