The installation of Mr Arthur M. Myers as Mayor of Auckland was witnessed by a large number of citizens. Tbo retiring Mayor (Hon. E. Mitcholson) and incoming Mayor delivered lengthy addresses in reference to the progress and needs of the oity. Both speakers urged the importance of the Greater Auckland scheme and the immediate prosecution of the drainage and water extension systems. The total nnmber of passengers carried by the Auckland tramways duriDg 1904 was 18,045,000. The Education Board to-day decided to ask tho Government for a grant of £SOOO towards the erection of a training college. A donation of a hundred guineas was received by the Board from Mr Arthur M. Myers (the newly-elected Mayor of Auckland) towards the erection of a manual and training school at the Thames. Wellington, last night.

It is statsd that negotiations are proceeding between tho Government and Mr Dodder for the purchase from the latter of the Belleview Gardens, Lower Hutt.

The quantity of gold exported from New Zealand last month was 39,0840 z, of the value of £157,769, as compared with 24,9590 z, valued at £92,684 in the corresponding month last year. Last month’s return was : —Auckland 15,5120 z Greymonth 66100z—£16,438, Nelson 18130z—£5025, Hokitika 11540z—£4616, Westport 5760z —£2305. A fire to-night destroyed a large twostory building occupied by Hodder and Tolly, grain merobants, also about £SOO worth of seed-cleaning apparatus, and a large quantity of seed and grain. The premises of Keeling and Mundy, painters, Allman, a blacksmith, and Osgood and Hanook were also damaged. The insurances are not available. Keeling and Munday’s stock was much damaged. A young man named Charlee Bell wa knocked down by an eleotrio car to-nigh: and had one thigh broken.

Dunedin, last night. The police raided a boarding house at Nugget Bay, in Clutha district, and seized a quantity of whisky and beer. A proseoution will follow.
