“ We deem it opportune to present a brief resume of the transactions recorde d in our minutoa with reference to matters which have been prompted and urged Dy this Association during the past year, it ie desirable that such a statement bo made in order to put before members, who have been unable to attend meeting, but whose sympathy and support of the objects in | view are assured, the accomplishad facts of the period, so that an increased interest may be taken in all our proceedings. A? .other objeot is to arouse the apathetic (members to a deeper sense of their responsibilities in political and social affairs agieetme both local and general public in- * treats, it is hopad that this desirable effßb't will be ettained by the submission of this report, fiegarding the opening of the Uawa Bridge on 23rd April last it is gratify?™ to state «»• promises of our Member (Hon. J. Carroll) made in February, 1904, to this Association, were du y fulfilled; and it is also p.?asmg to relate that he was present on that ?coaaion *how the genuine interest taken by “imm the advancement and progress of the Coast district. This Association was represented by Mr E. P. Joyce, President, and the various local bodies, at the invitation of this Association, were in strong evidence on the occasion, one and all expressing their hearty congratulations to the local Committee at tho completion of a most necessary public Of still greater importance, not only from a dissrict point of view, but of colonial sigoifaeisocej is the opening of the Gisborne Te Karaka railway on April 13th last. As a step forward in the march of onward pros V cress this should and does exemplify toe in a properly directed channel. It is Maimed that among other combinations, j Ihia Association has persistently striven l 0 forward the extension of this V Hoe. However, to satisfy the expressed opinions of this Aesociat on and the requirements of the Motu, the bon. Ministers who visited this district for the occasion have publicly promisea a farther extension from Te Karaka of a fiva mile Hue, which assurance, judging from the past, must be accepted as bona fide. The visit of the Ministers to this district, induced by the Association, undoubtedly will result in great good, as in the course of their travel and intercourse with settlers in remote parts thoy have got a better and more acourate knowledge of local requirement It is indeed gratifying to tho Association that when very / marvv of the public refused to credit the promises of Ministers, the extenmon which ■ was definitely decided “*?“ Jlja AstZ become an aaeomplished fact.
