| evening for tho purposo of urging upon the I Qovetnment the necessity of proceeding I with much greater speed with the conI slruction of the Midland railway, and to I let by contract the Otira tunnel. It was I stated that the exports from the West Coast last year exceeded one million, and [ this is likely to be doubled when the railways are completed. All the speakers, including local members of Parliament, were in favor of borrowing a sufficient amount to finish all the main trunk lineß. The meeting was the. most enthusiastic ever held here, and it was resolved to continue agitating until 'the wishes of the people from Canterbury and Westland were complied with.
