Napier, last night, A disturbance took plaoe at Fort Ahuriri on Saturday evening. A man named Joseph Farrelly was being arrested for drunkenness, when he became violent, and the oonstable oallod for assistance, and a man named James Enowles proceeded to help him. Farrelly kioked Knowles in the face, and a crowd whioh had collected hustled Knowles and the policeman, and Farrelly got away. Later on Constable Esson appeared, and with Constable Mellsop found Farrelly in a yard off Hardingo road. The man again turned on the constables, biting and kicking furiously, while a crowd which hud collected ridieuled and hooted the police. After a time Constable Mo&liater came on the scene, and Farrelly was overpowered. Constable Mellsop had the back of one of his hands badly mauled by the man’s teeth. Farrelly was to-day fined a total of £6 and costs for disorderly conduct and resisting the police. Waihi, last night. A disgraceful scene occurred on Saturday night when the police who were arresting a drunken man were assaulted by a howling and yelling mob, who raised the cry, “ Australians to the rescue.” The police were stoned, and several windows broken. Eventually the police were rescued, and the prisoner carried off by his friends. Several prominent citizens attempted to pacify the crowd, but in vain. Sergeant Sheenan and the constables were bruised about the head and bodies. Subsequently the man was re-arrssted, and upon the President of the. Miners’ Union addressing the crowd they became quieter, bnt followed the police to, the station, hooting. Mr KeDrick, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, was prominent in attempting to get the crowd to behave itself.
