INTERESTING RELIC

FIISST PUBLICAN’S LICENSE ISSUED.

I (Fei Press Association.) I Wellington, last night. I Mr C. H. Mitford, of the headquarters I of the Bank of New Zealand, has in his possession the first publioan’s license ever issued in New Zealand. It is dated 13th • October, 1840, and is signed by G. Cooper, Colonial Treasurer, and countersigned by Geo. M. Mitford, father of Mr C. H. Mitford, who is now 90 years of age, and still in excellent health. The license was granted by a Justice of the Peaoe at Kororareka, Bay of Islands (now Rnssell), and was issued to John Johnson, who was J authorised to sell ale, beer, or other malt I

liquors, or wine, oider, ginger beer, spruoo beer, brandy, rum or other fermonted or spirituous liquors.” From the faotgthat whiskey is not mentioned on the license it would appear that it had not then obtained any degree of popularity.
