F. Rouse, aged 21 years, the second mate of the Government schooner Countesß of Ranfurly, was washed overboard and drowned on the passage of the vessel from Auckland to Niue. Decsased was a native of London, where his parents reside.

Christchurch, last night. Mr O. L. Rußsell has consented to become a candidate for the Lyttolton electorate, at present represented by Mr G. Laurenson, M.H.R.

It is reported that there were certain irregularities in connection with the recent municipal election of New Brighton that may lead to legation. The irregularities mentioned are the retention of a candidate’s name on the ballot [paper Rafter his resignation had been received by the returning officer, and the use of only one roll and-one ballot box for both Mayoral and Council elections. The Premier and Mrs Seddon arrived from Tirnaru by the first express to-day, and left for Weilingtou by the evening steamer.

Ashburton, last night

Interviewed by an Ashburton Guardian representative the Premier stated he had not bought a share in the New Zealand Times newspaper for five years. The shares recently purchased, numbering 19,000 out of the total share list of 37,000, have been secured by two residents of Wellington. \ :
