Tbo San Franoisoo mail reached Gisborne by the Victoria yesterday. East Cape reported yesterday morning •a moderate S.E. wind, barometer 29.98, thermometer 60, overcast, heavy sea. The presentation of trophies in connection with the Gisborne Bowing Club will take place to-morrow evening at 8 o’clock.' Tho monthly meeting of the Hospital Trustees will be held at 2.30 to-morrow afternoon.
A meeting of the Turanganui Lodge, No. 7, U.A.0.D., will be hold at tho Publio Hall, Patutahi. at 8 o’clock this evening. Captain Edwin reported yesterday :—. “JBtrong winds to gale from between north east and east and south ; glass probably fall; tides very high ; sea heavy ; rain probably heavy ; rivers flooded."
A meeting of the Star of New Zealand Reohabite Tent was held last evening, Sister A. Patterson, Chief Raler, presiding. Sister Xi. Carron, P.0.R., was elected minute secretary in place of Sister I. Georgeßon, resigned. This Tent is making steady progress, both in membership and funds, and under its young and popular officers should continue in its prosperous condition. At the Police Court yesterday morning Josep Ryan was fined £5 and costs for procuring liquor during the currenoy of a prohibition order. Thomas Donovan was oharged with procuring liquor for Ryan, and appeared in Court plainly under the influence of drink. He was ordered to be 'ooked up until this morning to give him an opportunity to get sober, v At the Polioe Court yesterday afternoon a native named Graham Piwaka, of Whangara, was oharged with the theft of ahorse valued at £3, the property of Hare Noa Roa, Puatae, Bergeant MoKenzie proseouted and Mr Bright appeared for the defence. The evidence for the proseoution showed that acoused had sold a chestnut aorse to Robert Brown, of Puatae. The horse had been'claimed by Hare Noa Noa, but Piwaka refused to give it up. The ease was adjourned until 2 p.m. to-day. On Tuesday morning the residence of Mr W. Bailey, at Pouawa, was destroyed |by fire. Mr Bailey ieft home at about 8 /clock to do some work on another part if the farm, and on returning an hour or two later found his dwelling in ruins, only the chimney standing. There was no one Iso at home, Mrs Bailey being away in Auckland. Mr Bailey hod recently sold lis property, and was about to give up aossesßion. The house was insured in the Ciaw, Union and Crown office for £2OO, md the furniture and piano in the same office for £llO,

Yoatoiday the Town Clerk received advioo from tho resident seoretavy of tho A.M.P. Society, Mr Lowe, stating that his head oißoe had sanctioned tho loan of j£75,000 to the Gisborne Borough Council for wator supply purposes. At the annual mooting of householders in Motu tho following wore elected to represent the Motu school ooinmittoo : Messrs H. J. Ellis, E. F. Jackson, T. E. Tyerman, T. Elliott, and G. Taylor. Mr Ellis was re-elected chairman, and Mr Jackson secretary. A half-caste girl named Lily HardiDg, 14 years of ago, appeared before Mr Barton, 8.M., at tho Police Court yestsrday on a ohargn of forging and uttering a cheque for £2 16s at Tolago Bay. The evidence showed that accused had taken a form from a cheque book belonging to A. E. Reeves, by wnom she hod been employed. Accused had tendered ihe ohoque in payment for goods rocoived from G. Williams’ shop, Tolago Bay. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court at GUborne next Monday. She was further charged with forging the name of A. E. Reeves to a cheque for £5 14s 6d and with issuing the Bame to Winifred Maulsid. Acoused pleaded guilty to this obargo also, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was fixed at £25, with one surety in that amount.
