The weather, though dull, kept fine for the holiday. . The principal attraction was the races at Ellerslie. The volunteer manoeuvres at Xakapuoa wore concluded, and some useful work was put in by the men.
At the Auokland provincial no-liconse convention over 800 delegates were present. Mr Wesley Sprngg was elected president. The convention adopted the following test question for .Parliament candidates t '* Will you, if elected, do your best by voice and vote to maintain unimpaired the present rights of the people to deal with liquor by local option, and if technical faults are found in the law will you endeavor to have the same removed so that the will of the people may be made i effective.”, A resolution agaiDst the issue of packet licenses was carried unanimously. It was agreed to welcome Father Hays. A motion was carried affirming the people’s right to a colonial option .poll on the liquor question. An amendment was defeated by S 7 to 77. - I
The Union Company claims Jglsoo salvage from the owners of the barque Helen, which the s.s. Haupiri towed from a dangerous position at Hick’s Bay to Auokland.
