The Governor and Lady Piunket give a garden party _ at Elmwood, the Vice-regal residence here, on the 26th and following day. They visit the Maori pa at Tuahiwi, near Kaiapei.
At the Lyttelton Court Win. Henry Francis Nott was charged with having on the 17th inst., with intent to do grievous bodily harm, pointed a gun loaded with powder and shot at his father. When the police arrested young Nott the gun was loaded, though two cartridges, which would have fitted the gun, wore found in his possession. The Magistrate dismissed the ease, as it had not been proved that the gun was loaded.
S. R. Webb was elected Mayor of Lyttelton, and E. W. Relph Mayor of Rangiora, in both cases without opposition. There are 27 candidates nominated for the 14 seats on the City Council, and 13 gentlemen have been nominated for thenine seats on the Lyttelton Borough Council. For seven seats on the Marshland School committee eight ladies have been nominated.
Two boys, aged respectively 12 and 13 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of having 1 smoked cigarettes in the public street, and were convicted and discharged. The person who supplied the oigarettes also pleaded guilty, and was similarly dealt with, after {the Justioe had warned him that ho rendered himself liable to a flue of £lO,

I Thames, last night. I Thomas Lupton, a miner, met with a | serious accident while working in the I Romata Vajley, near Thames, While working, the quartz suddenly came away and struck him on the head and baok, inflicting severe injuries, He received a double fracture at the base of the skull and lesser injuries. Ho lies in a critical condition in the Thames Hospital. His recovory is doubtful. Lupton was very seriously injured by an explosion some time back, and had only left the hospital a few weeks ago. He is unmarried and aged 26.
