The Land Commission reached Cheviot Settlement this afternoon and started to take evidence. • . Thomas Gee, holder, .of a grazing’run, who represented ell the holders of grazing runs on Cheviot, presented a petition for the right of renewal with revaluation, for at present petitioners had only 21 years’ tenure, half of which had already run.^ A large numbers of settlers were examined during the afternoon and evening, the majority in favor of freehold. A few considered the leasehold should be adhered to. They stated that the value of Cheviot land had increased considerably oblate years, although for the first six years' settlers had struggling times. - To-morrow the Commission viflt Waiau and Culverden. On Thursday they proceed to Hawarden and return to Christchurch on the sams day. /V )
