COMMERCIAL.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the Agent-General, dated London, 15th instant:—“ The mutton market is' firm. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4fd per lb for light weights (which are extremely scaroe) and 4£d for heavy weights, of which there is a large supply. Other North Island mutton is quoted at.4Jd per lb for light weights, and 3Jd for heavy weights, and Biver Plate mutton 3f d light weights and 3 3-8 d heavy weights. There is a good demand for all lamb, and the market is firm. The average price to-day for New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is 5 5-8 d per lb, of brands other than Cantorburv s£d. The beef market is quiet. Supplies of Biver Plate beef are heavy, whilst stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light. The average price to-day for hindquarters of New Zealand beef is 3 3 8d per lb, and for fores 2£d per lb. The butter market is deoliniDg on account of the home supplies increasing, and the market continues steady on the decline, some holders forcing sales. The ayerago price of choieost New Zealand butter to-day is 103 s, Danish 105 s. The cheese market is quiet, with a tendency in favor of buyers. There is less demand; white 58s per cwt, colored 57s per cwt. The hemp market is dull, and priees are irregular as a result of heavy arrivals, There is a disposition to sell distant deliveries of hemp. The price of New Zealand hemp, good fair Wellington grade, on spot to-day, per ton, is fl2B 10s, and May to Jane shipments were similarly quoted. The cocksfoot seed market is firm, and buyers have been offering more freely. The average .price to-day for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot, weighing 171bs per bushel, on spot, is 54s per cwt. The importations of Biver Plate mutton, lamb and butter into the United Kingdom for the month of March ara as follows — Mutton: London 52,004, _ Liverpool 106.766, Newcastle 13,240, Cardiff 12 960, Southampton 3121.
