The Chambers of Commerce Conference adopted a motion that the time wsb opportune for the settlement of the New Hebrides question. . A delegate remarked that the action of the Federal Government in relation to the islands of the Pacifio was so far of a oharacter which suggested that it might be better for the Commonwealth to drop tinkering with them any longer, and leave them to the New Zealand Government, which might be expected to do something statesmanlike. What was the use of suosidising a line of steamers to the Islands when tne settlers could ’not send produce to Australia ? A motion was passed that business io the Pacific cable, by improved methods and increased activity in the management might be considerably expanded, and the anuual_ loss might be avoided and converted into a profit. The loss was to be attributed to wont of business method on the part of the Postal Department.
