GISBORNE-TE KARAKA RAILWAY.
OPENING CEREMONY TO-DAY.
I The opening of the Gisborno Te Earaka I railway takes place to-day and the event 1 promises to be one of the most important |in tho history of the district. There will i be three members of the Ministry present: I Messrs Hall Jones, McGowan and Carroll, | while the visitors will inolude Messrs A. L. I D. Fraser and Herries, M.H.R.’s, and Mr JM. Clark, representing the Auckland I Chamber of Commerce, j Tho arrangements made for to-day’s [ gathering are of a most complete character I and excursionists to Te Earaka can rely lon a good day’s entertainment. In adI dition to the Railway League’s programme a capital sports meeting has been arranged to be held on the Te Earaka Racing Club’s grounds, and other forms of amusement will.be.provided. ... . Trains, will' leave Gisborno at eight ! o’clock and eleven, and the run to Te Earaka is expected to take a little over an hour. The Ministerial party ‘will go out by the eleven o’clock train, a special carriage boing reserved for them and the members of tho Borough and County Councils and Harbor Board. The return fare to To Earaka has been fixed at Is 6d, whiob price should induce a large number to make the trip. Upon arrival of the train at To Earaka
[ the visitors and members of the looal bodies mentioned will bo driven in Cossidy’s coaches to the racecourse, where the speeches will bo made. Short congratulatory addresses will bo given by His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Townley), Captain Tucker (County Chairman), and Messrs Patullo, Acland Hood, and J. A. Ctesar, and after the roplies have been received, the visitors will be entertained at
luncheon by the Te Karaka Committee. The visitors will leave early in the afternoon for Mr Hutchinson’s at Waihuka, where afternoon tea will be provided. I Those of the party who are proceodiog to the Motu will remain overnight as the guests of Mr Hutchinson, whilst the other members of the party will return to Te Karaka in time to catch the five o’clock train. Both the Gisborne bands will be in attendance at To Karaka. ]
Last evening. Mr Carroll received word that members of the Gisborne Bifles, the bands, and cadets would be conveyed free by train on the date of tho opening of the Gißborne-Te Karaka extension.
The visitors to Motu will include tho following: His Worship the Mayor and Mrs Townley, Hon. and Mrs Hall-Jones,
Hons. Carroll and McGowan, Captain Tncker, Messrs Gordon, Schmidt, Harding, Matthews, Whinray, Kennedy, Bright, Gaudin, Muir, and H. H. Wall.
