Mr Dyer, the lately appointed S.M., held his first sittings of the Magistrate’s Court in Whangarei. He was occupied the greater part of to-day in hearing a obbg arising through a fire spreading on Maina district. F. McDonald sued T. H. Todd for £157 damages for grass, fences and fruit trees burned early in March. After hearing lengthy evidence for plaintiff, the Magistrate held that, although the fire might have come from Todd’s property, there was no evidence showing it wsb started by Todd or by anyone with his authority. Plaintiff was non-suited with oosts, £9 19s 6d.
