RAILWAY WORK
’(Per Press Association.) Hokitika, lasi night. In acknowledging a telegram from the Westland Railway League notifying a meeting of Canterbury and Westland representatives to discuss the position in regard to the East aud West Coast railway, the Premier replied that the League may rest assured that consistent with moneys available each and every part of tho colony will have justice done in respect to railway- expenditure out of the Public Works Fund, and tho claims of Canterbury and Westland will not bo overlooked.
AGITATION IN CANTERBURY.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. A meetiug to consider the question of urging tho Government to complete the Midland railway with as little delay as possible wa3 held this evening under tho auspices of the Chamber, Mr H, Quano
(tho president) presiding. There was a large attendance, and a prominent feature of the meeting was its representative character. There wore delegates present from tho local bodies and other associations in Qanterbury, such as the Farmers’ Union,
tbo Trades Council, Trades Unions, Employers’ Unions, County Councils, Borough Councils, and Road Boards. Tho following motion, moved by Mr Boper, was carried unanimously: “ Recognising tho many advantages of railway communication between the West Const and Canter-
bury, and realising the enormous cost of slowly constructing a line which can practically have no earning power until completed, this meeting of local bodies and ecomonic associations of Canterbury, and Westland,now urges upon the Government to .make an allocation of at
least £200,000 per annum in order that this important line may bo completed within five years.” It was also resolved that the forogoing resolution be forwarded to tho Right. Hon. the Premier, and (that all Canterbury and Westland members of
Parliament bo asked to take united action in urging the Government to compete the East and West Coast railway at the earliest possible date,and that it bs a suggestion _to all our political organisations that special prominence he given to tho speedy completion of this important work.
